BRITDOC Impact Award Spot – Behind the Scenes

This ad for the BRITDOC Impact Award was shot with a multi-stage motion control slider (linear mover) and the Talon pan/tilt head from Pacific Motion Control. The head was used as a repeat head and controlled by the Talon controller. The slider was controlled by our stepper speed controller. While this wasn’t truly a motion control shot, in that the head and slider were not controlled by the same system and would not have repeated together, the shot only called for precise movement and this was a low cost and simple option. The DP for the shot, Dallas Sterling, is a fantastic DP who is very familiar with our equipment and just needed a simple system for this shot. We were happy to help. A Canon DSLR was used for the shot, and the zoom was accomplished in post.

“Live” and “Hand Held” Camera Feel with Motion Control

Many people assume that because motion control equipment is precise and repeatable, that shots filmed with motion control will feel sterile or mechanical. The two commercials below illustrate how motion control can be used to capture a “live” or “hand held” camera feel, while still allowing for precise repeatability for filming multiple passes and background plates.

Pacific Motion Control can provide handwheels or panbar encoders for live control of our motion control pan/tilt, or pan/tilt/roll heads. Additionally, we can provide encoders for dolly/track, all crane axes, and focus, iris and zoom, which allow for complete control of the rig and camera lens when designing shots. This means that very organic moves can be recorded live, then repeated precisely. In addition to our standard encoder package, Pacific Motion Control can provide a Preston FIZ motion control interface or a full Preston kit including wireless hand controller, receiver, and motors.
