Behind the Scenes with the Impala

Behind the Scenes with the Impala

The Impala impala is highly portable and customizable. For this movie shoot, the Impala had to be shipped to another state, and run on circular dolly track, straight motion control track, and set up on Steeldeck. When fitted with the Talon head, the Impala is a light, modular rig which can even be lifted into place by a few guys. The Impala was used extensively on this shoot for visual effects shots, shot on a green screen stage with practical set pieces. These shots were filmed on an Arri Alexa.

This commercial offers a heartfelt and intimate look at baseball. This commercial was filmed on location, with the Zebra motion control dolly on a very complicated curved-to-straight-to-curved track. The track setup used 360 degrees of curved track, placed at opposing ends of around 84′ of straight motion control track. To make things more complicated, the track had to be laid on the unlevel grass and dirt surface of a baseball field. This setup required extensive cribbing and apple boxes to level and be made stable. The specialized motion control track was custom built by Mike Sorensen at Sorensen Design International.

I hesitate to post these pictures, because it seems like whenever I post pictures of an impressive rig setup or new custom rig I get requests for the same thing, right away. This was a tough one. Curved track is difficult on its own. Curved-to-straight track is a nightmare. This track setup was curved-to-straight-to-curved on grass! Yes we can do it again, but it takes a lot of prep and a ton of setup which means time and money, but in the end the spot looks great.
